What’s On

IMPORTANT NEWS:

Dear Theatre Downtown fans and friends,
We got some shocking news on Saturday night, November 9th. The Fifth Avenue Antiques building has sold, and our landlord has terminated our lease and has given us 30 days to move out. So, after 10 years and over 70 plays, Mr Burns: A Post-Electric Play by Anne Washburn will be the last production in our current location. But the show will go on!

We are well-positioned to relocate, and hope that you’ll continue to see our shows, as we quickly seek out some temporary location(s) to perform the rest of our current season, and search for a new permanent home. Meanwhile, make your plans to see Mr Burns! It’s a terrific play that really uses the ambiance of the space to great advantage. It’s fitting that a play about the end of civilization is your chance to say goodbye to our old space, but don’t worry, it’s not the end of us! We’ll be back!
Sincerely,
Bates Redwine
President of the Board of Directors

In the near future, an apocalypse has wiped out society as we know it. As the survivors struggle to find a cultural touchstone that they all relate to, they land on a common reference: The Simpsons. This dark comedy explores how these television characters become a new storytelling device, then a new kind of theatre, then archetypes for a new age. A tribute to live theater, and the resilience of Bart Simpson through the ages, Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another.
